Richard Royal
Ken Saunders Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new work by Richard Royal. Royal, a native of Washington and based out of Seattle, is recognized as one of the most talented and skilled glassblowers in the country. His organic forms and shapes reveal his sensitivity to the fluidity and sensual nature of the medium of glass. Royal’s work is very physical and evokes movement in the forms.
Royal’s glass sculptures have changed and evolved many times throughout his career in a variety of ongoing series: the Diamond-cut vessels, the Shelter Series, the Relationship Series, and his new Aperture Series.
This exhibition consists of Royal’s newest forms in the Aperture Series. These forms, made of hot-sculpted glass, combine vivid and dense colors within clear glass. Sculpting in hot glass is perhaps one of the most difficult and precarious of the techniques of working in hot glass due to the technicality required to ensure the pieces achieve form and shape using only steel tools and molten glass.
Richard Royal’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Tampa Museum of Art, FL; the Mint Museum of Arts+Crafts, Charlotte, NC; the Daiichi Museum, Nagoya, Japan; the Muskegon Museum of Art, MI; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; and the New Orleans Museum of Art, LA, among many others.
